The FITWELL program is available to UCLA Faculty, Staff, Students and Recreation Members.

Developed in support of UC Living Well, a UC wide wellness initiative and Be Smart About Safety, a workplace safety and wellness program, the FITWELL program through UCLA Recreation is working with Workers Compensation, UCLA Environmental Health & Safety, UCLA Healthcare, Insurance and Risk Management, CHR and other campus agencies as well as the Ashe Center, Student Development, Student Psychological Services, Residential Life and other student services to bring greater awareness of and to promote the benefits of wellness programs to the campus community.

Workplace wellness programs, such as UCLA Recreation’s FITWELL program, can offer great benefits to UCLA and its employees by facilitating a healthy workplace culture. Incorporating physical activity and healthy eating into an office or other organizational culture pays dividends for participants and helps to control health care expenses. The FITWELL program offers a variety of wellness options to choose from which aids in employee’s commitment to fitness, and the Fit Squad offers a "get started" package to help UCLA departments establish an organizational culture that values employees making healthy lifestyle choices.

Choose Your Workout

Complexity of Choreography: (Low / Medium / High) 

Exercise Intensity: (1 Low / 2 Medium / 3 High)

Each class is listed according to the complexity of choreography is an individual preference. Beginners should check out our free introductory clinics at the beginning of every quarter. These clinics introduce the choreography seen in most step and kickboxing classes. Each participant is responsible for monitoring his/her own intensity level during class.

Group Exercise Leaders will introduce you to the Rate of Perceived Exertion Scale during class. This is a subjective method of monitoring intensity and is based on a 0-10 scale. Zero (0) corresponds to the intensity of sleeping. Ten (10) corresponds to the intensity of running as fast as you possibly can. In general, during the cardio portion of a class, one should work between 3 and 7. Intervals should be somewhere between 6 and 9. Intensity is an important factor in achieving and improving one’s cardiovascular fitness level.

Trained Leaders

Our Group Exercise Leaders (GEL) are highly trained. Upon completion of an entire year long training program, participants must pass a nationally recognized certification exam, an in-house practical exam and an in-house audition. Proudly, most of our instructors are UCLA students.

Intro to Barbell- Learn basic barbell movements like the deadlift, front squat, back squat, overhead press, and bench

Power Lifting- Advanced course focusing on the deadlift, squat, and bench. Intro to Barbell strongly recommended. 

Olympic Lifting- Advanced course focusing on the clean, jerk, and snatch. Intro to Barbell strongly recommended 

Intro to Strength Training- Learn the basics of strength and conditioning, including how to use dumbbells, kettlebells, and machines. 

Intro to Body Building- Introductory course for strength training specifically for muscle development and body sculpting. 

Pilates Reformer- Pilates Reformer challenges your entire body with great attention to the core using the reformer, which contains a platform that moves back and forth along a carriage. Excellent for improving posture, strength and flexibility.

It is our mission at UCLA Recreation to offer affordable, safe, and fun fitness options for our students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Teaching life-long skills that promote healthy life-style choices is a business that we take pride in. FITWELL has the unique opportunity to impact the lives of many people in a positive way, and we prepare ourselves well to take full advantage of this opportunity. Our program is challenging, and our fitness leaders are excellent role models who help to inspire our participants to train their minds, bodies, and spirits!

The Fitness Leadership Program (FLP) is an in-depth training program that is based on NSCA, ACSM, and ACE standards. This program has two tracks: 1) the Group Exercise Leader (GEL) and 2) the Personal Fitness Trainer (PFT). The program is academic as well as practical. FLP participants learn all of the fitness fundamentals required of Fitness Professionals (Anatomy, Basic Physiology and Adaptations to Exercise, Biomechanics, Exercise Technique, Program Design, Special Populations, Adherence and Motivation, etc.) FLP participants assist our current fitness staff, serve as UCLA Fitness Leaders & Liaisons to the campus community, and volunteer at health fairs and other wellness functions. At the end of the program, FLP participants take a nationally recognized exam. Group Exercise Leaders take the ACSM exam ($300) and Personal Fitness Trainers take the NSCA exam ($300). Test costs are not included in the course cost. In addition to these tests, FLP participants take an in-house practical exam and perform an audition. Our UCLA fitness staff is selected through this process.

SPECIFIC INFORMATION: Acceptance into the program will be based on an application. The program is scheduled to take two and one-half quarters. Attendance at training sessions is mandatory. Cost of program does not include books or exam fee.

If in good standing in the program with demonstrated proficiency, FLPers can start teaching fitness under the supervision of certified personnel and earning money by the start of Winter Quarter.

Staff & Faculty Programs


The Bruin Health Improvement Program (BHIP) is a three-month program—exclusively for UCLA faculty and staff at no cost (for first time participants)—offering participants intensive lifestyle training in areas of exercise, nutrition, stress management and mental conditioning. You must be a full-time UCLA faculty or staff to participate. This program comprise of three 1-hour group workout sessions a week.

Fall 2016 Session Dates: 8/22/16- 11/14/16 (no class on 9/5 & 11/11)

OnRamp is a comprehensive conditioning program that will improve cardiovascular fitness and overall strength and mobility. It is appropriate for individuals without current limitations looking to become much more physically active and nutritionally mindful.

Class times: M,W,F 6:15AM, 7:15AM, 8:15AM, 11AM, 12PM, 5:15PM, 6:15PM


This program is appropriate for individuals who are 50 lbs or more overweight and are looking for tailored nutritional guidance and increased physical activity.

As a BHIP participant you are expected to abide by the following rules/principles:

    • Show up to you assigned class. If you cannot attend your assigned class you may go to another class scheduled that day. 
    • Arrive to your class on time. If you are more than 10 minutes late to a class you will be marked as absent and will not be allowed to participate in the workout of the day.
    • Obtaining more than 3 absences could result expulsion from the program

BHIP Ongoing

As a BHIP graduate, you have the opportunity to continue what you've learned in BHIP OnRamp with BHIP OnGoing.

Our ongoing BHIP classes are offered 5 days a week, Monday-Friday at 6:15am, 7:15am, 11am, 12pm, 4pm (only MWF), 5:15pm, and 6:15pm at Drake Stadium.

With your registration, you are eligible to attend 3 or 5 classes per week (see prices below). Classes meet continually but not on holidays and most university breaks.

    • $20/month via payroll deduction for UCLA Recreation members or the monthly rate paid in full at time of purchase (i.e. $20/month × 3 months for a quarter = $60)

Bruin Mindfit

UCLA Recreation is pleased to announce our Bruin MindFit program.

This program is made possible through the continued University support of our successful FITWELL programs, exclusively for UCLA faculty and staff at no cost.

Bruin MindFit

A 12 week hands-on mindful movement and meditation course that teaches several effective stress-management tools.  Practice meditation, breathing (pranayama), basic yoga movement, relaxation, walking, and everyday mindfulness. 

Bruin MindFit is appropriate for individuals, of all fitness levels, who are ready to cultivate everyday wellness and a daily practice of stress relieving mindful movement and meditation.  Some possible benefits of Bruin MindFit are:

    • greater focus, clarity, and productivity
    • increased energy, vitality, & optimism
    • improved body awareness
    • increased strength & suppleness
    • enhance your overall level of wellness

    How do people get selected for the program? 

    The selection process is based on a lottery. All applications received will be entered into the drawing. The application must be completely filled out.

    Is there a wait list for those not drawn in the lottery? |
    There is no wait list.

    Does Bruin MindFit cost money?
    No. This program is being offered free to faculty and staff as part of FITWELL’s employee wellness initiative funded by the University.

    What is the program like? What will we be doing?
    Bruin MindFit is a stress mindful movement and meditation program. Meditation, breathing (pranayama), yoga, relaxation, walking, and mindfulness will be practiced regularly. The goal of the program is for you to walk away with a daily practice that suits you best.

    How much physical activity will be included in the program?
    Yoga and walking will be done regularly. The yoga will be suitable for a beginner and/or someone who practices yoga regularly. It will include getting up and down from the floor. You will learn several short sequences that could serve as your daily stress management practice. We will also explore several ways to use walking as a meditation and stress management technique.  The walks would last 5 minutes to 30 minutes.

    Will the meditation require floor sitting?
    We will learn several types of meditation. You will always have a chair as an option. When we do meditation on the floor, there will be bolsters, blankets, and blocks available that help to make floor sitting more comfortable.

    Who is going to teach the classes?
    Our FitWell Staff of Yoga, Meditation, and Fitness Instructors.

    Do I have to sign up for a specific time or could I go to any of the scheduled times?
    Yes, please choose the class time that suits you best. We will do our place you in your preferred timeslot as space permits. This will be your assigned timeslot for each day of class, for the entire program. On an occasional basis, you can attend another class if you cannot make the class you are enrolled in.

    Do we need to attend each and every class?
    We recommend you miss no more than 4 classes total in order for it to be as beneficial as possible. If you foresee missing 4 or more classes, we recommend you apply for the next Bruin MindFit session when you can attend consistently. Schedule alternatives (i.e. practicing from home, make-up classes, etc.) will not be offered.

    Do I need to be a recreation member to participate?
    Can students participate? No, recreation membership is not required. You only need to be a full time faculty or staff member to qualify. This program is not for students.

    Can I repeat Bruin MindFit?
    If you have participated in the past (either dropped the program early without an excused dismissal such as a medical or family emergency, or finished the entire program), the cost is $150.

These workshops focus on resolving particular stressors that affect many types of jobs including sitting or standing for long periods of time, lifting, bending or other repetitive workplace actions. 

FIT to Sit teaches proper sitting posture and provides an exercise regimen to get those who sit for long periods of time better fitness. 

FIT to Work is tailored to specific job duties within a department or group (lifting, twisting, stuffing, standing, bending, etc.)

Be in the moment … Think before you Lift

Lifting, carrying and material handling are essential job functions for many employees who work at UCLA. 

Whether you are an office worker moving reams of copy paper, a food service worker stocking boxes of bananas, a carpenter handling bulky sheets of plywood or a custodian making beds,  you are using your back.  Our back is an amazing structure that allows us to play sports, drive a car and do our jobs. Nevertheless, we take our back for granted even though we need a healthy back for everyday activities such as walking, sitting, standing and LIFTING.  If you’ve experienced back pain you know that lifting something as simple as a glass of water can be challenging… and painful!! 

A well balanced diet, proper posture and safe lifting techniques can have a lasting impact when it comes to back injury prevention. However, if we don’t take care of our back we are vulnerable to injury. 

Back Injuries consistently rank as one of the top three injuries that occur across the UCLA campus.

They account for approximately 20% of all injuries reported at UCLA.

One back injury can result in extensive lost time away from work and cost thousands of dollars in medical expenses. 

A review of Bureau of Labor statistical data showed that on average a back injury results in 8 lost days from work. 

A serious back injury can result in an employee being unable to work for weeks or even months and could involve surgery.   Considering that UCLA represents one of the densest campuses in the country boasting more than 37,000 students and over 23,000 faculty and staff it is vital that we increase our awareness of safety and back injury prevention.

With that in mind, Environment, Health and Safety along with Insurance and Risk Management and Cultural Arts and Recreation are collaborating on a Safety Awareness Campaign, “PROTECT  YOUR  BACK”. 

The campaign will launch on October 12, 2015 and will last through the end of December. 

We will educate employees about the dangers of improper lifting and promote the four vital lifting principles:

      • All required forms must be completed, current and on file prior to each session.
      • All forms expire 12 months from completion date or as medical history changes.
      • All clients must wear appropriate footwear and clothing to each session. 

      *Personal Fitness Training on the premises of any UCLA Recreation facility is restricted to UCLA Recreation Personal Fitness Trainers (PFT) only. Any participant who is conducting or is suspected of conducting personal fitness training with a patron in a UCLA Recreation facility and who is not a UCLA Recreation PFT will have membership privileges reviewed and/or revoked.

Chair Massage

Feeling stressed, tense or mentally foggy? A few minutes of chair massage can improve circulation, reduce stress, relieve tension, decrease pain and rejuvenate your spirit. Chair massage is provided by a professional practitioner in an ergonomic chair and focuses on key tension areas in the back, neck, shoulders and arms.

    Massage can be scheduled in any 5-minute increment (minimum of 10 minutes). For example, purchase 60 minutes and schedule six 10 minute massages, four 15 minute massages or in any other way you would like to break it up. 

    NOTICE: You must cancel or reschedule within 24 hours of your appointment or your minutes will be considered used. For refunds, please visit Sales and Service - Membership in the John Wooden Center (2nd floor). Refunds will be granted for requests received within 3 months of purchase. Private Pilates: Meet with a Private Pilates Trainer to train specifically in Mat Pilates or Pilates Reformer.


         Mat Pilates is a total body exercise regimen designed by Joseph Pilates that increases strength and flexibility and helps to improve posture. It is primarily performed standing or on a mat utilizing resistance bands, loops, balls, and gliders.

         Pilates Reformer is a piece of resistance exercise equipment designed by Joseph Pilates. It consists of a platform that moves back and forth along a carriage. Resistance is provided by the exerciser’s body weight and by springs and pulleys attached to the carriage and platform. Pilates Reformer challenges your entire body with great attention to the core. Excellent for improving posture, strength and flexibility.

Alexander Technique

Meet with a certified Alexander Technique Practitioner to learn proper movement mechanics and posture. Great for releasing unnecessary tension in the body that may be causing pain. This technique helps  you to re-educate your mind and body to move, sit, stand and perform daily activities with grace and ease.

Step 2: Purchase Sessions

Purchase session(s) in-person at Sales & Cashiering, JWC 1st floor, or online here prior to your first appointment.  Please bring the receipt indicating proof of purchase to your first session.

Step 3: Schedule training sessions. Look forward to your Alexander Technique trainer contacting you within 2 business days to set up your first appointment.

About Our Staff

FITWELL employs FITWELL Consultants who provide general exercise assistance in our Strength & Conditioning Zones and assist with the general operation of the FITWELL Services Desk, including providing general FITWELL information. FITWELL also employs Group Exercise Leaders who lead fitness workouts, Instructors who teach all of our non-credit rec classes, Personal Fitness Trainers who coach individuals, Support Staff who organize the professional staff and supervise programs, and 7 professional staff who administer and coordinate all of the FITWELL Services.
