Summer Internship Program
UCLA Recreation is pleased to announce several exciting summer internship opportunities geared towards post-baccalaureate and graduate students. Interns will have the opportunity to explore the unique aspects of running a comprehensive recreation program at a major university. General responsibilities include providing assistance, program development, administrative operations, and special projects for both the department and in a specific functional area.

Description: The goal of our summer internship program is to foster the development of recreational professionals by immersing them in fast-paced, hands-on recreation programming. Ten interns will live together in University Community Housing for the summer and will gain professional experience in a variety of areas within UCLA Recreation. It is important to note that upon arrival, as part of the intern orientation and training, the group does camp out for three to four nights.
The start date of the internship is June 13, 2013 and the end date is August 23, 2013. Application submissions via our online application will begin in early January 2013.
The following functional areas may be available for summer focus, exploration and program development:
Budget and Finance Administration
Club Sports Administration
Facility and Special Event Management
Fitness and Health Promotion
High School Enrichment
Intramural Sports Administration
Marina Aquatic Programming
Marketing and Promotions
Program and Facility Assessment
Summer Youth Camps
Be at least 18 years of age
Possess current First Aid/CPR certifications or the ability to obtain one before beginning the internship
Possess current Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards certifications (American Red Cross preferred - Aquatics area only)
Submit to a criminal background check. Future or continued employment is contingent upon satisfactorily completing the background check.
Experience working in a recreation facility, recreational programs, and/or special events
Possess effective interpersonal skills and strong desire to learn
Be willing to work variable and extended hours sufficient to meet program objectives
Be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
Youth and Family Programs interns - this position requires participation in the University's Employer Pull Notice (EPN) System where the University will receive notices from the DMV whenever you have been convicted of motor vehicle violations, both on and off the job.
In the final year of completing an undergraduate degree or pursuing a graduate degree in recreation, physical education, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology, sports management, college student personnel administration, student affairs, higher education, or have equivalent work experience
Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification preferred (Aquatics Area only)
Each functional area may have specific skill requirements such as certifications, outdoor skills, sailing or surfing experience, etc...
Stipend/Benefits: Each intern will actively participate in a comprehensive Collegiate Recreation Internship program with opportunities such as professional networking, comprehensive and experiential learning and an increased understanding of how a large college Recreation program operates. Each intern will be paid a total of $1500, plus University Housing and a University Dining meal plan (the housing and meal package is estimated at $3700 and is treated as taxable income by the IRS.)
